Christ Church stands as a splendid embodiment of "Villa Rustica" architecture, crowned with a uniquely Romanesque campanile, or tower. Since its dedication in 1857, this National Trust-classified edifice has been a beacon of Christian worship in Brunswick, for almost 170 years. Christ Church, Brunswick is not only the most famous example of this mid 19th century architectural style, it is probably the only Villa Rustica church building in Australia, in the style made famous by Osborne House on the Isle of Wright, Queen Victoria’s retreat. Her husband, Prince Albert personally designed the house to resemble the elegant seaside palazzos of Italy. Christ Church was dedicated only 6 years after Osborne House and is a very rare example of this Italianate style of architecture, unrivalled anywhere in Australia.
The church and its gardens are much loved by the people of Brunswick, as a popular place to escape busy Sydney Road, to reflect, pray or maybe just enjoy the beauty of this sacred space.
Entering the church, one passes under the campanile where a single bell tolls the Angelus daily. Inside, the church retains a rustic, exposed-timber aesthetic with some Gothic elements. The church is widely considered one of the most beautiful in Melbourne, an architectural treasure.
