About this cause

The Sunlight Garden is an initiative of the Friends of Refugee Communities (Tasmania).

The garden is currently being re-established on a lovely site in New Town, after moving from its previous location in Moonah.
Our new garden site is privately owned – and there is rent to pay!
We're seeking support to ensure we can keep up rent payments without imposing too much cost on our gardeners.

WIll you help us pay the rent?

Join the Sunlight Club and sign up to make a regular monthly donation.
Click "Monthly" on the right, and choose your amount (minimum $5).

     * $10 a month will help one gardener with a large garden bed.
     * $20 a month will support a family with two large beds.

What’s really important is that we have some ongoing regular income.

Alternatively, a one-off donation will help with other garden costs, such as water usage, insurance, seeds, manures, tools, etc.

The Sunlight Garden supports local refugees who have settled in Tasmania, predominantly from Afghanistan.  It provides a space for people to grow their own vegetables and reduce their food bill. The opportunity to grow culturally familiar foods such as gandana*, that they're unable to buy elsewhere, is really important to them.

The garden is also providing an opportunity for people - who in some cases have little to no education - to gain qualifications in horticulture.
This gives them a great sense of pride, as well as increasing their knowledge and confidence.

Importantly, the garden is also a focal social point for the community, and provides a safe place for people to come together and connect, socialise, chat and drink tea.

With your help we hope to ensure the long-term survival of the Sunlight Garden.

Thank you for your support!

* Gandana is a type of leek grown in almost every province in Afghanistan, but it is not generally available in Australia. It is used in bolani and other dishes.
